Custom Commissions
Tell us what you imagine. Our artisans will carve it from the wood of the Himalayas. Direct-to-artisan transparency with no middlemen.
The Philosophy of Bespoke Craftsmanship
At Ladakh Wood Works, custom woodwork is an unbroken partnership between patron and artisan. Rather than ordering from an industrial catalog, you collaborate directly with Shingzo-pa master carvers high in Leh to commission heirlooms tailored to your spatial architecture. Our custom commissions are more than just transactions; they are collaborative journeys between you, the patron, and our master artisans in the high Himalayas.
When you commission a custom piece from us, you are engaging in a centuries-old tradition of artistic patronage. Historically, the finest Ladakhi woodwork was commissioned by royalty, noble families, and monasteries. Today, we bring that same devoted Himalayan craftsmanship to patrons and sanctuaries worldwide. Whether you envision a monumental dining table infused with Buddhist motifs, a specialized meditation altar, or a simple yet elegant Choktse scaled precisely to your living room, we bring your vision to life with uncompromising quality.
From Vision to Workbench: The Process
Our custom commission process is designed to be highly interactive and transparent. We remove the opaque layers of traditional retail, connecting you directly to the artisan's workbench in Leh.
1. The Consultation
It begins with a conversation. You connect directly with Stanzin via WhatsApp or email to share your ideas, sketches, dimensions, or inspirations. We discuss your spatial requirements, preferred timber, and the specific iconography or aesthetic you desire. We advise on structural feasibility and provide an initial estimate.
2. Drafting & Blueprinting
Once the concept is agreed upon, we translate your vision into precise technical drawings and motif layouts. For complex architectural elements or large furniture, this step ensures perfect alignment with your space. We refine the blueprints until you give the final approval.
3. The Carving & Regular Updates
As our Shingzo-pa artisans rough out the timber and carve the intricate reliefs, we share regular photo and video progress logs directly from the Leh workshop floor. You will witness the transformation of raw timber into your finished piece, step by step.
Categories of Custom Work
Our expertise spans a wide spectrum of woodwork. While we specialize in traditional Ladakhi aesthetics, our technical mastery of wood carving and joinery allows us to execute a diverse range of projects.
Bespoke Furniture
Beyond our standard Choktse tables, we commission large-scale dining tables, intricate cabinets, heavy timber bedframes, and ornate seating. We can adapt traditional motifs to sleek, modern silhouettes or create fully immersive, historically accurate pieces.
Sacred Spaces & Altars (Choesham)
For practitioners and spiritual centers, we build custom shrines and meditation altars. These require strict adherence to scriptural proportions and profound respect for the sacred symbols being carved. From compact home altars to massive monastic installations, we approach these projects with deep reverence.
Corporate & Hospitality Commissions
We partner with boutique hotels, luxury resorts, and cultural institutions to create statement pieces that anchor a space. Whether it’s an intricately carved reception desk, statement wall panels, or bespoke signage, we deliver commercial-scale projects with artisanal integrity.
Military & Government Officer Desks
We have a proud history of crafting custom executive desks, command study tables, ceremonial podiums, and farewell mementos for officers of the Indian Army (XIV Corps / Fire & Fury Corps), ITBP, Air Force Station Leh, Border Roads Organisation (BRO / Project Himank), and regional administrators. Each desk is carved in seasoned high-altitude timber with custom regiment crests or Buddhist protective motifs, crated in military-grade shock-absorbent packaging for safe transit across India.
Bespoke executive desks start from ₹35,000. Institutional orders include staged progress photos and verified dispatch via India Post Cargo.
The Promise of Direct Trade & Material Integrity
Ladakh Wood Works operates on a strict direct-to-artisan model. When you commission a piece through our workshop, your investment goes directly to sustaining the livelihoods of master Shingzo-pa carvers in Leh, ensuring this ancient Himalayan craft thrives for generations without commercial intermediaries.
We are uncompromising on materials. We ethically source premium Himalayan timber, such as seasoned high-altitude Malchang Willow and Sham Valley Walnut. Our finishing processes shun harsh modern polyurethanes in favor of traditional, breathable natural oils, beeswax, and mineral pigments, ensuring your piece is not only beautiful but environmentally responsible and safe for your home.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the starting budget and deposit process for a custom commission? +
While we undertake projects of varying sizes, custom commissions require significant design and setup time. Therefore, we generally focus on substantial pieces (such as full-sized furniture, altars, or architectural elements) rather than small, singular trinkets. Contact us to discuss your specific idea.
How are payments structured for custom work? +
Typically, we require a 50% deposit to cover materials and initiate the blueprinting and carving process. The remaining 50%, plus shipping costs, is due upon completion of the piece and your final approval via video inspection, prior to dispatch.
Can I customize the finish or paint colors? +
Absolutely. You have complete control over the final look. We can leave the wood bare and smoothly sanded, finish it with natural oils to highlight the grain, or apply traditional Ladakhi polychrome painting in the vibrant colors of your choice.
What if my commissioned piece arrives damaged? +
We take extreme care in crating and packaging all custom orders using international standards for fine art and furniture. All high-value shipments are fully insured against transit damage to guarantee your peace of mind.
